The Onondagas
the Onondagas were one of the six Iroquois nations
- ON-on DAH-gah
- the Onondagas also called them self's the Onontakeka
- Onontakeka means people of the hills
What did the Onondaga eat ?
- they were hunters and gathers
- they fished and hunted game such as deer, turkey, and rabbits
- they also farmed
- there harvest included corn, beans, and squash
- they called these crops the three sisters because women tended to the crops
- in spring they would gather wild onions and milkweed and in summer they would gather berries
Where did they live?
- they live in what is now present day New York
- many still live in New York today
- but some fled north into Canada in 1700's
What was there live style?
- they lived in small wooden cabins that they built them self's
- men hunted and gathered food
- women grew crops and did chores
- women cooked, made clothing, and took care of children
- young boys would hunt with the men
- young girls would help the women do chores
- they held ceremonies all the time
- some for thanking for good harvest and some for other things
